The name of the city consists of one character from each of its predecessors. Akishima is the result of the merger of the town of Showa and the village of Haijima. The first character contributes the Aki to the name, and its the first character from Showa. That character has multiple pronunciations. Aki is the kunyomi; sho is the onyami.
The second character is the shima and comes from Haijima, where its pronunciation is slightly different due to rendaku.
